Manny Piñol waylaid by technocrats


HAD Manny Piñol play-acted like a “thought leader” who would often break out of his “silo” to talk about novel and “disruptive” propositions for the agriculture sector, where do you surmise would he be halfway through the Duterte administration’s six-year term? Had he opted for big, pretentious talk, he would have been a “first among equals” in the Duterte cabinet, with a rock star status. The media would have elevated him to a high pedestal, the perch for achievers and movers and shakers in the Duterte cabinet. He would have been asked to write the definitive paper on “The Next Agricultural Revolution.” The masters of the jargon, you see, are often the masters of our public universe.

The problem was this. Manny was not predisposed to inhabit that world of technocratic bubble, and…
