Foreign Tourists will be Penalized
A lull in explosive activity is being noted in Mayon Volcano as the country heralds the coming of 2010. However, PHIVOLCS is still keeping alert of the possible explosion from the volcano. People are still prohibited from entering the declared danger zones and the elements of the military are still guarding the ways to the volcano.
Albay governor Joey Salceda is still firm on his stand that no one should be allowed to enter the danger zone and that includes tourists.
“Tourist, beware. Never venture inside the danger zone or face charges.” This is the gist of the government’s warnings after it was discovered that some foreign tourists, along with their local guides, entered the danger zone to have the closer look at Mayon Volcano’s activities.
Firework like no Other
The angry Mayon Volcano attracted tourists, both foreign and local, to visit the province of Albay so as to witness some explosions and pyroclastic flows from the volcano. Many of them commented that Mayon Volcano’s activities are much better than the usual fireworks display during New Year’s Day.
Businesses are booming around the volcano as hotels and pension houses are already full with tourists. Taxicab and vehicle-for-hire drivers are now working almost 24 hours because of the upsurge of customers. Tourist guides were also in demand because many tourists wanted to get closer to Mayon Volcano.
Penalty for Erring Tourists
The information on tourists entering the danger zone alerted the government. Elements of the military guarding the danger zones were increases. Large boulders were placed on roads leading to Mayon Volcano to serve as roadblocks.
The national government reminded all tourists that entering the danger zone is against the law. Anyone caught inside the danger zone will face the necessary charges and penalties.
